The Alvin takes its name from a manned deep-sea research submersible owned by the US Navy. Originally commissioned in 1964, it continues to serve researchers today, with an unparalleled ability to dive and perform at depths of upto 6,500m below sea level, giving it ability to cover almost 98% of the sea floor. The Alvin is named after famed geophysicist and oceanographer Allyn Vine, who helped envision the idea of scientists using submarines and submersibles to undertake research and discovery at previously unattainable depths.
